Publication Process
The Journal of the Nigerian Society of Chemical Engineers (JNSChE) follows a structured and transparent publication process to ensure high-quality, peer-reviewed content in Chemical Engineering. Below is a step-by-step guide to the process, from manuscript submission to final publication, designed to support authors in navigating the journal’s workflow efficiently.
1. Manuscript Submission
Authors are required to register on the journal’s online submission system, accessible through the JNSChE website. During registration, authors must create an account, fill out a submission form, and upload their manuscript as a Microsoft Word document. The submission form includes fields for:
- Title, abstract (up to 200 words), and keywords.
- Full names, addresses, emails, and telephone numbers of all authors, with the corresponding author clearly indicated.
- Confirmation of originality, ethical clearance, and permission for copyrighted material, if applicable.
Manuscripts must adhere to the journal’s formatting requirements: double-spaced, Times New Roman, 12-point font on A4 paper with 2.54 cm margins, and references in Harvard format. Authors receive an automated acknowledgment of submission via the online system, with further correspondence sent to the corresponding author’s registered email.
2. Initial Screening
The Editorial Board conducts an initial review to ensure the manuscript aligns with the journal’s scope, meets formatting requirements, and demonstrates sufficient originality and quality. Manuscripts not meeting these criteria may be returned to authors for revision or rejected. Authors are notified of the screening outcome through the online system.
3. Peer Review
Accepted manuscripts are assigned to at least two expert reviewers from the journal’s reviewer database. Reviewers evaluate the manuscript’s scientific merit, originality, and relevance, typically within one month. Authors are notified via the online system that their manuscript has been sent for review. Reviewers may:
- Accept the manuscript as is.
- Recommend acceptance with revisions (minor or major).
- Reject the manuscript, providing reasons such as lack of originality or ethical concerns.
If a reviewer declines to review (e.g., due to lack of expertise or time constraints), they may suggest alternative reviewers. Authors receive reviewer feedback through the online system and are requested to revise within two weeks if revisions are required.
4. Author Revisions
Authors must address reviewer comments and upload a revised manuscript through the online submission system, highlighting changes (e.g., in yellow) and providing a separate response to reviewer feedback in the designated form. Revised manuscripts may be sent back to reviewers for further evaluation if significant changes are needed.
5. Final Decision
The Editor-in-Chief makes the final decision based on reviewer recommendations and revised submissions. Possible outcomes include:
- Acceptance: The manuscript is approved for publication, pending typesetting and payment.
- Rejection: The manuscript is rejected, with feedback provided to guide potential resubmission or submission elsewhere.
Authors are notified of the decision via the online system and their registered email.
6. Typesetting and Author Proofing
Accepted manuscripts are typeset for publication. Authors receive a typeset copy through the online system to review for typographical, grammatical, or formatting errors, ensuring all data and figures are correctly presented. Authors must submit corrections promptly via the system, noting that published content reflects their views, and the journal bears no responsibility for errors.
7. Payment of Fees
Upon acceptance, authors are required to pay the following fees via the journal’s secure online payment portal, integrated with the submission system:
- Manuscript Review Fee: N6,500 ($30.00 for overseas authors).
- Publication Fee: N10,000 ($40.00 for overseas authors) for non-members or members not financially up-to-date.
Payment instructions are provided through the online system, and proof of payment must be uploaded to the submission portal. Payment deadlines are March 15 for the March/April edition and September 15 for the September/October edition. Manuscripts will not be published until payment is confirmed.
8. Publication
Accepted and paid manuscripts are collated, edited, and finalized for publication in the journal’s biannual issues (March/April and September/October). The final typeset edition is sent to the journal’s head office in PDF format for printing and distribution. Members and corresponding authors receive one free copy per edition; additional copies can be purchased.
9. Post-Publication
Published articles are available to subscribers (individuals: N6,000; institutions: N10,000; overseas: $100 per volume). Authors may request reprints at a moderate fee per page, payable through the online portal, before publication. Any errors or concerns identified post-publication should be reported to journal@nsche.org for review under the journal’s correction or retraction policies.
10. Contact for Inquiries
For questions about the publication process, submission system, or payment details, contact the Editor-in-Chief at journal@nsche.org. Authors are encouraged to review the Submission Guidelines for detailed formatting and submission requirements.
